Here are some key takeaways from the session by Chris Roland.
1) Informative points
Photocopy a couple of pages from the picture dictionaries, cut the pictures out and use these as actual points (tokens). Children get interested not only in trying to read the word on their card, but also sharing it with their classmates and seeing what others have got.
At the end of the lesson, children can stick their pictures on the chart.
2) The H point
Children can be given helping points. Whenever you see someone helping his/her classmate, give them a helping point. You can also encourage them to share the point with their classmates ("Would you like to share your helping point with everybody?"). If they agree to share the point, then everybody gets a point.
3) Alternative winners for team games
Inspired by the Tour de France:)
On the board, write teams' names and keep the score while playing. At the end of the game the teams are awarded different jerseys. Stick the corresponding jerseys next to the teams.
This way teachers can increase a number of winners and encourage students to continue playing even though their team might not be winning numerically.
