Whole-class reward systems are an excellent way to foster a positive classroom culture and promote teamwork to encourage good behaviour. In a previous blog post, I shared some ideas on cooperative discipline. In this post, I will provide three examples of reward systems that can be implemented in the classroom.
Reward Money
It's a good idea to agree on the kind of behaviour you want to encourage in your classroom. Once you've done that, you can give the children a class wallet to keep track of the money they earn for having that behaviour. Children enjoy seeing the money they've earned add up in their wallet. To make the reward system even clearer, you may want to create a chart that shows the amount of money required for each reward.
Star Jar
The same can be done with stickers. Display a jar outline. Then, choose the type of good behaviour you want to encourage. Whenever you catch your learners doing these things, reward them with a sticker and ask a volunteer to stick it on the jar outline.
Reward Reveal
Create a small poster that displays a reward picture. Cover it with post-it notes, and write down a specific behavior you're looking for on each note. As your learners display the desired behaviors listed on the post-it notes, remove the corresponding note from the poster to reveal a small part of the prize. Once all the post-it notes have been removed, the reward is earned.
