In Japanese Hirameki means ‘flash of inspiration’, and it is about turning paint blots into something else by adding a few lines or dots.
Steps:
Pre-design some paint blots
Go through the blots with the children and brainstorm what they can see
You'll see that some children are very quick at bringing the watercolour splashes to life, while others need a bit of guidance. In this case you could ask them to find an animal, a fruit, a vegetable, a classroom object, etc. among the blots.
Distribute the pre-designed paint blots
Invite the children to interpret the shapes and turn them into something else
Tell them that there are no rights or wrongs!
Monitor and help them with the vocabulary if they want to label the drawings
Tips:
Use watercolour paper
Use a brush or a pipette
Spray a sheet of paper with water first, so that the blots have fuzzier edges
Don't look at the paper while doing the blots :)
