While I was doing my research on needs analysis, I found this wonderful activity by Jessica Mackay. I used it with groups of 11 -12 year olds and it worked wonderfully well! Here's how I used Jessica's activity.
English and Me
1. In pairs, students use the prompts to make questions. For example,
Extra classes? -> Did you ever do any extra English classes? Where? How long for? etc.
Depending on the proficiency and competence of your students you may like to focus only on one part, e.g. Past experiences.
2. In pairs, students ask and answer the questions and compare their past experiences, present motivations and future expectations of learning English. Provide relevant language as needed. Students take notes.
3. Homework: students go through their notes, summarise their partner's answers and post the summary on Google Classroom (I've used "Question Assignments").
4. Focus on error correction in the next lesson. I used Bamboozle to make the correction a bit more dynamic. Once we played the game and corrected the mistakes in teams, I asked the students to focus on the same sentences individually (you can project the sentences or prepare a worksheet in advance).
